Interview by Nesli Doğa Solmaz
Göksu Başaran is a journalist and actress who bridges creative storytelling with independent media. Drawing from her experience in front of the camera, she brings a human-centred perspective to journalism through her independent platform PolicyGrey. In this interview with Nesli Doğa Solmaz, she speaks about her journey from acting to journalism, the vision behind her media work, and the role of storytelling in shaping meaningful public conversations.
Question:
You are widely known for your acting career. How did this journey begin, and what kind of perspective has it given you over time?
Göksu Başaran:
Acting has never been just a profession for me; it has been a way of understanding people and the world more deeply. Being in front of the camera requires stepping into different lives, exploring emotions, vulnerabilities and personal conflicts that may be very different from your own. Each role taught me to observe closely — not only what people say, but how they express themselves through silence, body language and subtle gestures. Over time, this experience strengthened my empathy and my ability to look beyond surface narratives. Acting showed me how powerful storytelling can be in creating connection, and this understanding later became one of the foundations of my work in journalism.
Question:
How did your experience in acting influence your transition into journalism?
Göksu Başaran:
My transition into journalism felt natural rather than sudden. Acting allowed me to explore stories through interpretation, while journalism gave me the opportunity to engage with real stories and real people. The experience of working in front of the camera taught me how important listening is. During interviews, I try to understand not only the words being spoken but also the emotional and social context behind them. Journalism carries a responsibility to reflect reality accurately, but it also requires sensitivity toward the human experiences involved. My acting background helps me approach conversations with empathy, which adds depth to the way I report and tell stories.
Question:
How did the idea of PolicyGrey emerge, and what motivated you to create it?
Göksu Başaran:
PolicyGrey was born out of a desire to create space for independent, thoughtful journalism in Europe. Today’s media landscape moves very quickly, and while information travels fast, context is often lost. I wanted to build a platform that values analysis, clarity and editorial independence. The project focuses on European policy, human rights, migration, gender equality and broader international developments. My aim is not only to report events but also to explain how political decisions affect people’s everyday lives. Europe is interconnected, and many issues cross national borders, so I believe journalism should reflect that complexity in an accessible and responsible way.
Question:
How do your identities as an actress and a journalist complement each other today?
Göksu Başaran:
I see acting and journalism as two different expressions of the same core idea: storytelling. Acting helps me understand emotional depth and human vulnerability, while journalism grounds that perspective in facts, ethics and accountability. When working on stories, I try to combine analytical thinking with emotional awareness. Acting has taught me about rhythm, tone and human connection, while journalism ensures that narratives remain truthful and responsible. Together, they allow me to create work that is both informative and relatable.
Question:
What is your long-term vision for your work in media and storytelling?
Göksu Başaran:
My long-term vision is to develop PolicyGrey into a recognized independent media platform across Europe, focusing on cross-border journalism and meaningful political coverage. At the same time, I want to continue exploring the connection between journalism and creative storytelling. I believe strong narratives can help people engage more deeply with complex issues. Moving forward, I hope to build projects that combine analytical journalism with narrative depth, encouraging readers not only to stay informed but also to reflect and think critically about the world around them.
